The Lake District – The UK’s Mountain Bike Mecca

The Lake District in Cumbria presents  some of England’s highest mountains  , such as the Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain. Other summits  in the area  include Skiddaw, Grasmoor, Grisedale Pike, and Red Screes to name  a few.

Lakes are also a  permanent  sight in the region, hence the name Lake District. Famous worldwide for their splendor  and   placid  , these lakes have become a  major  reason why tourists band to Lake District. Magnificent  lakes in the region include the likes of  of Windermere, Ullswater, and Buttermere among others. Lakeside cities also have absolute majority of their hotels built near these lakes like the Keswick Hotels and hotels in Ambleside.

Given the beautiful yet challenging tracts of land that are found in Lake District , there is no doubt  why mountain biking is such a big  attraction here. There are bike trails  built  for  occasional  and biking beginners and there are bike paths suited purposely  for veterans  of mountain biking. One of the most popular    mountain bike routes in Lake District is the Keswick Dismantled Railway. If you are staying in one of Keswick hotels and have  the need to explore Keswick on a mountain bike, this trail is the ideal place to start  . It is a perfect route  for families and novice bikers as there are really not much to climb . The total distance is 4.5 kilometers, making the whole trip a 9-kilometer bike  trip  . There are great  views  along the way and you will encounter  a number of  bridges as well. But if you prefer extreme mountain biking, the railway leads to Skiddaw Mountain . All you need to do is just go further.

If you are staying in one of Ambleside hotels and feel the need to  mountain bike your way  around , the Loughrigg Circuit is the perfect site for you . A very easy bike route , the Loughrigg Circuit will take you on a clockwise spin , beginning with a concrete road from the parking lot to a stony path  once you get to the Loughrigg fell. The trail is best described as long descent with not much bumps. If you want to experience the trail with some sense of exclusivity, it is best that you take on it in the late afternoon or early evening.

If you want to take on a mountain biking trail that is less travelled, then Brant Fell might fit the description. Located at Sedbergh, this trail is quite difficukt to navigate even for experienced mountain bikers. First timers should treat this trail with utmost respect, as there are wild turns, steep climbs, and high drops. There beautiful scenes along the way too; grassy plains on a slow descent is very picturesque. One can for certain say the ride is worth the effort.
